The Return of the Cleric?

On Friday, three Afghan delegates, all former fighters against the Soviets, urged the loya jirga to include the name of Islam in the next government -- making it the transitional Islamic Afghan government. Delegates rose to their feet in unison to applaud.

Does this seem like a bad idea to anyone else? Maybe I'm over-reacting, but I didn't really like the last Islamic Afghan government very much. They were kinda crabby, what with the whole "death to America" thing. And what about the people of Afghanistan? Do they really want more of the "Put away your infidel tools of the devil (televisions)!" and "Women should be barefoot and pregnant" Taliban-esque lifestyle? I don't even understand the 72 virgins thing - who the hell has time to teach 72 different women what they should be doing in bed?! "No, no, dear, put your foot up and around... Ok, there ya go. Oh yeah... Who's your terrorist?!"

Hold on now. What's this?

Despite the show of unanimity, some dissenters said Islam had been misapplied in the past -- a reference to the Taliban's austere brand of religion.

"Austere brand of religion" you say? Ok, well I guess I would call stoning people to death for using a hairdryer a bit on the austere side of things.

Kandahar governor Gul Agha drew jeers when he said: "The Islamic name should be omitted from the government because in the past it has been misused."

His opinion was shared by other delegates who weren't given the microphone -- and who complained that ordinary delegates were being sidelined by religious and political leaders.

Good God, but this is really a damn shame. These poor people have a chance to live in peace and to be free from religious persecution, and it may very well all go right down the ol' shitter. This sucks goats and all, but the Real Question is this: Are we going to allow this to happen? Will we allow the return of a Taliban-style government? Will we, as a freedom-loving people, allow this to happen again?! More importantly, should we let it happen? Or should we drag all of Afghanistan kicking and screaming into the 21st Century?

If Western Civillization is going to win this War on Islamofacism, then we MUST install a representative democracy wherever and whenever we can. Afghanistan is just the first country that we must do this in. Iraq will be next. As an American, I've always rooted for the underdog, and cheered the righteous. Well, what could be more righteous and underdog-ednous(?) than liberating a repressed people?

Rats and Idiots!

It was the first World Cup meeting between the nations, and some fans back home in Mexico were crying following a loss that had been unthinkable a few hours earlier.

''It hurts us here,'' Jose Luis Luviano, a fan in Mexico City, said as he punched his chest. Tears melted the Mexican flags painted on his cheeks. ''There has to be an end to this disgrace where (Americans) treat us like rats and idiots.''

At the game, several thousand U.S. fans, decked out in red, white and blue, began taunting the Mexicans with chants of ''Adios, amigos.''

So, apparently they take their soccer, er, football, a little bit seriously in Mexico? I'm a big sports fan and all, but Jesus H. Christ, I'm sure as hell not gonna cry when my team loses. Rant and rave a bit, maybe flip over a car or two, but not cry. And when have we (Americans) ever referred to Mexicans as "rats and idiots"? Although Jose's comments do seem to justify the "idiot" tag...
